A laboratory method to estimate the efficiency of plant extract to neutralize soil acidity BABT

Water-soluble plant organic compounds have been proposed to be efficient in alleviating soil acidity. Laboratory methods were evaluated to estimate the efficiency of plant extracts to neutralize soil acidity. Plant samples were dried at 65ºC for 48 h and ground to pass 1 mm sieve. Plant extraction procedure was: transfer 3.0 g of plant sample to a becker, add 150 ml of deionized water, shake for 8 h at 175 rpm and filter. Three laboratory methods were evaluated: sigma (Ca+Mg+K) of the plant extracts; electrical conductivity of the plant extracts and titration of plant extracts with NaOH solution between pH 3 to 7. Acumulação de cobre e zinco em tecidos do feijoeiro em relação com o extraído do solo AGRIAMBI

Avaliou-se, em casa de vegetação, o efeito de doses variando de Cu (0 a 5,0 mmol kg-1) e de Zn (0 a 2,0 mmol kg-1) adicionados em um Cambissolo na produção de matéria seca e composição mineral do feijoeiro. Adicionaram-se, separadamente, as doses de metais no solo e, após 30 dias de cultivo do feijoeiro, determinaram-se a matéria seca e os teores de Cu e Zn na parte aérea e raízes. Os teores dos metais nos tecidos das plantas foram correlacionados com os respectivos valores extraídos pelas soluções de NH4OAc 1,0 mol L-1 pH 4,8 e pH 7,0 e DTPA 5,0 mmol L-1 pH 6,8 e os teores de Cu da parte aérea e raiz aumentaram proporcionalmente às doses dos metais adicionadas ao solo. Alleviating soil acidity through plant organic compounds BABT

A laboratory experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of water soluble plant extracts on soil acidity. The plant materials were: black oat, oil seed radish, white and blue lupin, gray and dwarf mucuna, Crotalaria spectabilis and C. breviflora, millet, pigeon pea, star grass, mato grosso grass, coffee leaves, sugar cane leaves, rice straw, and wheat straw. Plant extracts were added on soil surface in a PVC soil column at a rate of 1.0 ml min-1. Both soil and drainage water were analyzed for pH, Ca, Al, and K. Dolomite lime’s reaction applied on the surface of a sandy soil of the Northwest Paraná, Brazil BABT

Low Ca and Mg are serious limitations to crop production in sandy soils of the northwest Paraná, Brazil. Thus soil samples of an Oxisol collected in this region were packed into 30cm long columns. Dolomite lime (2.0, 0.84, 0.30, and < 0.30 mm screen) was added on soil surface, then leached with deionized water. Thereafter, the columns were dismantled and the soil cut into 5cm segments for chemical analysis. Dolomite lime increased pHCaCl2,, KCl-exchangeable Ca and Mg and residual CO3 mostly in the top surface layers. Surface dolomite lime had no effect on pH, Ca, Mg, and CO3 in the leachate, independent on the lime particle size. Effect of Organic Matter on Manganese Solubility BABT

The objective of this study was to re-evaluate some aspects of the relative importance of organic matter on Mn solubility in acid soil conditions. Field study showed that black oats, oil seed radish, elephant grass, lupin, leucaena, and coffee leaves serving as mulch decreased Mn solubility as compared with bare soil. The decrease in Mn solubility with plant mulch was related to increase in soil moisture content. Laboratory study showed that increasing temperature from 25 to 100ºC increased Mn solubility and total soil organic carbon was little changed; from 150 to 200ºC increased both Mn solubility and organic carbon oxidation, and up to 300ºC decreased Mn solubility and stoped organic carbon oxidation . Evaluation of oat extracts on the efficiency of lime in soil BABT

The low mobility of the soluble components of surface-applied lime, limits their ability to reduce subsoil acidity in variable charge soils. Laboratory experiments were conducted with brazilian Oxisol to evaluate the effect of oat extracts on the mobility of surface applied calcium in form of CaCO3. The following oat cultivars were evaluated: Argentina 5VL3, UPF 90H400-2, IAPAR 61, IA96101-b, SI 83400, EMBRAPA 29, LD 9102, FAPA 1, ER 93247, ER 90148, ER 89144, ER 93152, Alpha 94124, Alpha 94206 and Preta comum. Evaluation of Plant Residues on the Mobility of Surface Applied Lime BABT

A baixa mobilidade do calcário aplicado na superfície do solo diminui sua eficiência na redução da acidez subsuperficial. Foram estudados os efeitos de alguns resíduos orgânicos sobre a mobilidade do calcário calcítico aplicado na superfície do solo em colunas de PVC (60 cm de altura por 15 cm de diâmetro). Avaliaram-se resíduos de aveia preta, trigo, centeio, mucuna cinza e leucena na dose equivalente a 40 Mg ha-1. Adicionaram-se os resíduos vegetais e o calcário na superfície do solo e, após um programa de irrigação equivalente a 1500 mm de chuva por ano, avaliaram-se o pH e os teores de Ca, Mg, K e Al trocáveis no solo e solúveis na água efluente. Formas orgânicas e inorgânicas de mobilização do cálcio no solo BABT

A falta de Ca e a presença de Al na subsuperfície do solo restringem o crescimento das raízes. A eficiência da calagem aplicada na superfície do solo na neutralização da acidez subsuperficial é limitada. Foram conduzidos experimentos de laboratório com colunas de PVC para avaliar técnicas orgânicas e inorgânicas na mobilidade do Ca em solo com carga variável. Foram conduzidos dois experimentos com sais de Ca: CaCO3, CaSO4, Ca(NO3)2, Ca-acetato e Ca-citrato, e outro com CaCO3 associado com resíduos de aveia preta, trigo e leucena. Avaliaram-se os teores de Ca trocável em solucão de KCl 1M nas profundidades de 0 a 5, 5 a 10, 10 a 20, 20 a 30, 30 a 40 e 40 a 50cm. Redistribution of phosphorus in soil through cover crop roots BABT

The objective of this study was to evaluate if cover crops can absorb P from the upper layers and transport it in their roots to subsoil layers. Samples of an Oxisol were placed in PVC columns. Super phosphate fertilizer was applied to the 0-10 cm soil surface layers. The cover crops tested were: Avena strigosa, Avena sativa, Secale cereale, Pisum sativum subsp arvense, Pisum sativum, Vicia villosa, Vicia sativa, Lupinus angustifoliu, Lupinus albus, and Triticum aestivum. After a growth period of 80 days the cover crop shoots were cut off and the soil was divided into 10cm layers and the roots of each layer were washed out. Reduction of exchangeable calcium and magnesium in soil with increasing pH BABT

A laboratory study was conducted with soil samples and synthetic solutions to investigate possible mechanisms related with reduction in KCl exchangeable Ca and Mg with increasing pH. Increasing soil pH over 5.3 with CaCO3 added to the soil and with NaOH solution added to soil/KCl suspension increased adsorptions of Ca and Mg. The reduction of Mg was greater than Ca and was related to the concentration of soil exchangeable Al. The decreases of soluble Ca and Mg following addition of Al in synthetic solution were at pH > 7.5. The isomorphic coprecipitation reaction with Al compounds may be the most possible mechanism responsible for the decrease of exchangeable Ca and Mg with increasing pH. Possible chemical reactions are presented.
